National Stalking Awareness Day 2013

What is National Stalking Awareness Day?

National Stalking Awareness Day exists to raise awareness about the crime of stalking. Each year we have a different ‘theme’ and because of the recent stalking law changes, this year’s focus will be ‘Know the Law, Use the Law’. Currently the law is slightly different in England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland but importantly stalking behaviour is against the law across the UK. We want everyone affected by stalking to know that there is help available and that they are not alone. There is more information below about how we are planning to spread the message this year.

Conference

We will be holding a conference for practioners and partners in the community and criminal justice sector on the 18th April.  The conference will focus on the theme of Stalking Awareness Day which is ’Know the Law, Use the Law’. It will be chaired by ACPO Stalking and Harassment lead ACC Garry Shewan and speakers include Dr. Frank Farnham of the National Stalking Clinic, Dr Steve Connor – CEO of National Centre for Domestic Violence, Superintendent Paul Giannasi, Thames Valley Probation and the National Centre for Cyberstalking Research. The conference will be held at the Emmanuel Centre (http://www.emmanuelcentre.com/) in central London.

The Home Office have provided funding that will ensure 100 free places. Additional places after this will be charged at £60 perdelegate. To register your interest or if you are interested in exhibiting at the conference please email kristiana.wrixon@suzylamplugh.org

Presentations

Over the next few weeks we will be adding presentations to this web page that you are welcome to download and use as an awareness raising tool within your organisation. If there is a topic you would specifically like to see a presentation about then please contact us at info@stalkinghelpline.org

Stalking This PowerPoint presentation gives general information about what stalking is, the effect it has on the victim as well as the law in England and Wales. If organisations outside of England and Wales wished to use it then they are welcome to remove the slide relating to the law. We will post presentations specific to Northern Ireland very soon and Scotland is below.

Stalking Scotland This PowerPoint presentation gives general information about what stalking is, the effect it has on the victim as well as the law in Scotland. The presentation above refers to England and Wales, we will be posting one within the next few days that is specific to Northern Ireland.

Stalking and Health Professionals This presentation is as above but with an added slide about health professionals, as they can be vulnerable to becoming victims of stalking.

Digital Stalking NSAD13 This presentation was written by the University of Bedfordshire’s National Centre for Cyberstalking Research and would be relevant to any organisation with an interest in learning more about the cyberstalking.
